Today, I had to deal with an issue; some middle school students were caught smoking in the bathroom. What is going on here??? Well of course I forgot today was 4/20 – the so-called  “National Weed (Marijuana) Day,” a subculture to focus on cannabis. I should have been very alert today. It was almost blatant how the students did i too, like they wanted to get caught. Who knew young people were up on this! Was anyone else blindsided by this?  I’ll be prepared to stay alert for next year.

This date 4/20/09 also marks the 10th anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings that left 13 dead (12 students and 1 teacher). Many gathered to commemorate the Columbine victims and to promote peace in schools. I remember watching the anxiety on the news in 1999 about the Columbine shootings, and I remember the tension I felt when I went back to school the next day. That shooting shook us all in every state of the US. Since then, we’ve witnessed more violence in schools and tightened security. But it does seem like schools are taking more precautions. What’s your school security like?
